Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative: Methane Measurement Protocol

This document outlines protocols for measuring methane (CH4) emissions from marine diesel engines under steady state operating conditions. It includes five different scenarios, covering both test bed and onboard emission testing:

  • Test Bed: NOx Parent Engine Test – Measures methane emissions during the NOx certification process of marine diesel engines.
  • Test Bed: Emission Investigation – Conducts a detailed study of CH4 emissions beyond the typical NOx certification.
  • Onboard: Certification Level – Focuses on emissions testing under real-world onboard conditions but aimed at certification standards.
  • Onboard: Emission Test – A more practical onboard test using existing equipment.
  • Onboard: Continuous Emission Monitoring – Monitors methane emissions continuously during engine operation in service.

The protocol primarily addresses how methane emissions are measured in exhaust gases but does not include fugitive emissions from gas handling systems. It builds upon the NOx Technical Code (NTC) and aligns with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) standards. Additionally, the document stresses the importance of data recording, processing, and compliance with international environmental regulations.

Tables and figures provide detailed amendments to the NOx Technical Code for each scenario, as well as specific procedures for data measurement, recording, and processing.
