Reshaping Risk: An Insurer’s Path to Injury Prevention | EML

12/08/2025

In this video, we meet the team from EML (Employers Mutual Limited). Australia’s largest personal injury claims manager whose pioneering approach to workplace safety sparked the entire Mitolo case study. EML identified musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) as a leading cause of claims through their data analytics and launched a challenge to their Partner Innovation Network seeking solutions. By nature of injury, traumatic joint/ligament and muscle/tendon injuries account for 49,300 claims in 2022-2023 with median of $14,355. By mechanism of injury, body stressing injuries account for 45,000 claims with median of $17,800.

Their Mutual Benefits Program backed the initiative, enabling a proactive and human-centered intervention to prevent injuries before they occur. Acting as both investor and facilitator, EML brought together Prudence Rehab, Workplace Risk Technologies, Modjoul, and Mitolo Farms in a groundbreaking collaboration that continues to reduce injury rates and set new standards in safety technology.

This video series explores a ground-breaking workplace safety initiative born from a powerful cross-industry collaboration. Uniting an insurer, a rehabilitation provider, a risk advisory firm, a wearable tech company, and a forward-thinking employer.

At the heart of the story is Mitolo Farms, an Australian agricultural business grappling with high rates of musculoskeletal injuries (MSDs) among its workforce. Seeing both human and financial costs mounting, EML (Employers Mutual Limited) stepped in through their Mutual Benefits Program, issuing a call to action for scalable, preventative solutions.

Prudence Rehab responded with their IntelliCoach program, a behavioural coaching model enhanced by real-time wearable data. They partnered with Workplace Risk Technologies, who translated Mitolo’s risk profile into a strategic intervention and introduced the ideal tech partner, Modjoul.

Together, this coalition delivered an industry-first: a wearable safety pilot that achieved a 60% reduction in risky movements, zero lost-time injuries, and over $1.5 million in injury-related cost savings. Most importantly, it empowered workers to move better, feel better, and go home safer with the pilot now expanding across Mitolo’s 800+ staff as a mandatory PPE program.

In this series, each partner shares their unique role, challenges, and the measurable impact of their collaboration. Demonstrating what’s possible when data, technology, and human care align to solve one of the workplace’s most persistent risks.
