Dr. Maurizio Pilu

Maurizio is a technologist and tech executive with 30 years experience. After gaining a PhD in Artificial Intelligence at Edinburgh University he joined Hewlett Packard Laboratories in Bristol and Paolo Alto, CA, where he invented, published and commercialized a variety of cutting edge technologies.

After an Executive MBA, he moved on to a venture capital firm where he was in charge of deep-tech investments. He later joined InnovateUK, the UK’s Innovation Agency, where he drove high profile investment and strategies and founded the UK’s first-ever national digital innovation centre, Digital Catapult. He then moved on to Lloyd’s Register as VP of Digital Innovation with the brief to create and run its first ever digital innovation practice and contributing to transforming the business. More recently he founded and currently heads Safetytech Accelerator Limited, the world’s first and award winning, technology accelerator focussed on supporting corporates and institutions operating in safety critical industries drive forward technology innovation and adoption.

Maurizio has 50 patents, 35 academic publications and secured over $100m of investments for programmes and ventures he led. He is a fellow of the IET, where he currently serves on the policy oversight committee and has advised funders and governments on policy, strategy and investments since 2008. He is a respected thought-leader in tech and innovation, a speaker at conference and events and his work has featured frequently both on trade and mainstream media.
