New Report: Emerging Technologies for the prevention of MSD

10/10/2023

Safetytech Accelerator has partnered with the USA’s National Safety Council (NSC) to release a new report on emerging technologies aimed at preventing musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) in the workplace.

Safetytech Accelerator, in partnership with the Council’s MSD Solutions Lab, unveils a new report that assesses the benefits of the most common emerging safety technologies. In a collaborative effort initiated in 2021, the USA’s National Safety Council ( NSC ) joined forces with Amazon to address musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), the most prevalent workplace injury. Together, they established the MSD Solutions Lab, an innovative strategic initiative dedicated to identifying, researching, evaluating, and promoting innovative solutions designed to prevent and mitigate MSD injuries.

Safetytech Accelerator’s key role

Safetytech Accelerator played a pivotal role in supporting the MSD Solutions Lab throughout this partnership. Their contributions encompassed consulting with industry stakeholders and technology providers, developing a technology roadmap, identifying and profiling innovative solutions, showcasing them to industry stakeholders, among other endeavours. As part of that collaboration, Safetytech Accelerator assisted the NSC in creating a comprehensive white paper designed to  help employers navigate the evolving technology marketplace related to MSD risk reduction, offering insights on and whether and how to trial and adopt these cutting edge technologies.

The report

Titled Emerging Technologies for the Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders , the paper  is  the results of  interviews with executives from diverse  sectors such as agriculture, logistics, and manufacturing, combined with extensive research into market-available solutions that span computer vision, wearable sensors, exoskeletons, autonomous and semi-autonomous materials handling equipment and extended reality.

Some of the key highlights featured in the paper include:

  • Insights into the utilization of advanced visual analytics to analyse ergonomic risks across different worksites and enterprises.
  • How wearable sensors combined with advanced analytics can be a cost effective way to provide real-time feedback in the field
  • The potential and applicability of exoskeletons to reduce or eliminate the risk of injury.

Commenting on the release of the report said Dr. Maurizio Pilu, Founder and Managing Director of Safetytech Accelerator, had this to say:

“The marketplace for MSD risk management is enormous, and it’s increasingly becoming more accessible as innovators continue to push the boundaries of safety technology. Building awareness of these resources is a critical next step in the effort to solve the biggest workplace safety challenges, and we are proud to help advance this cause through our ongoing work with the MSD Solutions Lab,”
