What is an Innovation Lab?
An Innovation Lab is a structured, collaborative environment where organisations test and validate cutting-edge technologies before full-scale deployment. It serves as a safe space to test solutions, de-risk innovation, and drive operational excellence.
Who is it for?
Our Innovation Labs are designed for:
- Corporates: driving disruptive technology into core operations
- Government and government agencies: shaping and implementing innovation policies, driving technology accelerators, and fostering a pro-innovation ecosystem.
- Regulators: advancing regulatory innovation to create enabling frameworks for emerging technology adoption.
- Non-profits and institutions: leveraging technology-driven innovation to enhance social impact and operational effectiveness.
- Technology Providers & Startups: validating solutions in different real-world environments.
- Investors & Ecosystem Partners: backing scalable, high-impact innovations.
Key Benefits of Our Innovation Labs
- De-risk technology adoption: validate solutions before full-scale deployment.
- Faster time-to-value: speed up the transition from pilot to implementation.
- Regulatory alignment: ensure compliance with industry safety standards.
- Cross-industry collaboration: leverage insights from diverse safety-critical sectors.
- Optimized costs: up to 5x more cost-efficient than setting up internal programs.
- Access to our tech ecosystem – Engage with 600+ pre-vetted startups and providers.
Types of Innovation Labs We Offer
Our Innovation Labs are designed to align with your high-level strategic goals, offering flexibility and customisation to meet your unique requirements:

Corporate Innovation Labs
Bespoke labs designed to accelerate innovation and solve multiple challenges within organisations.
Our Corporate Innovation Labs provide a structured environment to rapidly test, validate, and scale solutions, embedding innovation into business operations.
- Seamless Integration: Collaborate with your team or opt for a turn-key acceleration programme.
- Private or Public-Facing Options: operate as a private in-house lab or a public-facing industry initiative.

Sandboxes
A controlled environment designed to test, validate, and scale solutions for complex, cross-organizational challenges. Unlike corporate innovation labs or tech accelerators, sandboxes enable multi-stakeholder collaboration to address systemic industry-wide problems that no single organization can solve alone.

Health and Safety Executive (UK)
Safetytech Accelerator partnered with the UK’s Health and Safety Executive through the Discovering Safety program to explore how data-driven innovation can prevent incidents in the construction sector. We identified three key challenges—data anonymization, visual analytics of work sites, and automated compliance—and collaborated with startups to pilot solutions that enhance workplace safety.

National Safety Council & Amazon (USA)
We collaborated with the National Safety Council and Amazon to design, establish, and operate the MSD Solutions Lab, a groundbreaking program launched in 2021 to tackle musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace. Over two years, the lab connected tech companies and startups to shape solutions and pilot emerging technologies, leading to multiple innovation showcases featuring breakthrough advancements.

Global Mining Corporate
Safetytech Accelerator worked with a leading global mining company to identify, pilot, and adopt innovative safety technologies. This included delivering a safety technology roadmap, designing risk-based challenges to trial new solutions across mining operations, conducting an innovation management review, and providing design thinking support to identify and prioritize key safety challenges

Corporate Accelerator: Waypoint
A maritime accelerator programme run by Safetytech Accelerator on behalf of Lloyd’s Register, focused on introducing innovative technologies to the marine industry. Over four cohorts, it helped make these solutions accessible and affordable industry-wide, generating dozens of client pitches, product refinements, pilots, and follow-on investments. The next evolution of the programme, Waypoint Stars, continues this mission with a focus on advancing safety and risk-related technologies in the maritime sector.

Industrial Safetytech Regulatory Sandbox (ISRS)
Improving safety and risk management: Safetytech Accelerator and Discovering Safety, a groundbreaking project delivered by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), worked with partners in industry and technology to explore opportunities to improve safety and risk management through innovation and regulation.

Smarter Regulation Sandbox (SRS)
Safetytech Accelerator and Discovering Safety (a programme of work led by Great Britain’s Health and Safety Executive, HSE) have launched a new industry leading Sandbox. Bringing industry, tech innovators and regulators together to explore how access to digital and machine-readable regulations can lead to accelerating compliance, improving efficiency and productivity, and reduce regulatory burdens on industry, whilst supporting innovators to bring emerging digital products to market.

Barriers Decarbonising Roads Sandbox (BDRS)
Safetytech Accelerator is working with Amey, Colas, Transport for West Midlands, and North Lanarkshire Council to launch this new Sandbox. Utilising on our expertise in creating and running Sandboxes, this initiative will bring together material innovators, councils, regulators, and industry leaders to identify and overcome barriers to the adoption of low-carbon materials. By working together, we aim to accelerate the uptake of sustainable solutions that can revolutionise the way roads are built and maintained in the UK.
