Safetytech Accelerator presents at the Sustainable Shipping Initiative quarterly meeting

26/03/2022

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) is a multi-stakeholder collective of ambitious and like-minded leaders, driving change through cross-sectoral collaboration to contribute to – and thrive in – a more sustainable maritime industry. The SSI’s members include companies such as Louis Dreyfus Company, Oldendorff Carriers, Rightship, Swire and the WWF.

We were very pleased to attend and present at the Sustainable Shipping Initiative Members’ meeting in March 2022.

At Safetytech Accelerator we run several initiatives which relate to sustainability in shipping. We presented our zero-methane, assurance of hydrogen/ammonia fuels, and crew wellbeing initiatives at this meeting.

Steve Price, Head of Partnerships at Safetytech Accelerator commented, “It was a pleasure to meet such a dedicated set of professionals and to discuss the role of technology in some of our industry’s biggest sustainability challenges. Only through innovation will we enable the rapid decarbonisation of our industry and tackle some of the critical crew wellbeing issues.”

We presented alongside the Lloyd’s Register’s Maritime Decarbonisation Hub who discussed their initiatives including the ‘Zero Carbon Fuel Monitor’, their ongoing safety work on Quantitative Risk Assessments for a range of ammonia-fuelled ships, and finally the ‘First Movers Framework’, designed to support first movers and green corridor initiatives to unlock investments in shipping’s decarbonisation.

Ahila Karan, Decarbonisation Analyst from LR Maritime Decarbonisation Hub had this to say, “This was a great opportunity to present our latest work and demonstrate how we are progressing with our current initiatives with the wider industry to help enable shipping’s energy transition, while ensuring the increased uptake and safe adoption of sustainable marine fuels. It was great to engage with the wide-ranging Members of the SSI, for perspectives across several segments of the industry, all highly engaged in working collectively towards a sustainable energy transition.”

Look out for news of more of our initiatives related to sustainable shipping…

About the Sustainable Shipping Initiative

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) was founded in 2010 by Forum for the Future in collaboration with WWF and industry leaders ABN Amro, BP Shipping, Gearbulk, Lloyd’s Register, and Maersk Line. In the decade since, SSI has worked to accelerate progress and collectively address industry gaps in areas ranging from closed-loop materials management, to sustainable finance, and shipping’s decarbonisation. We have grown to 15 members spanning the entire shipping value chain, from charterers, shipowners and shipyards, to banks, classification societies and NGOs.

About Lloyd’s Register’s Maritime Decarbonisation Hub

The mission of the Maritime Decarbonisation Hub is to accelerate the sustainable decarbonisation of the maritime industry, by enabling the delivery and operation of safe, technically feasible and commercially viable zero-emission vessels by 2030.
